Offline Mode: Work seamlessly anywhere

There are times when you need to keep working on your email, even if the internet connection drops, or you want to disconnect deliberately. Perhaps you’re on the go, trying to catch up on tasks while riding a train, using a mobile hotspot – or you just really don’t trust that public Wi-Fi at a random café you’re sitting at. In situations like these, the Offline Mode feature can be a helpful solution. It allows you to control exactly when the app connects to the internet and synchronizes your data.

Offline Mode: Work seamlessly anywhere

When working offline, you’ll find all of the emails, calendar events, contacts, and other items right where they were the last time the app connected to the internet. That way, you can keep working on your emails or other tasks.

This can also be an effective way to disconnect from the influx of new messages and focus on finishing what you already have on your plate first.

Emails sent while you’re offline will stay in the Outbox folder and will be sent out once you reconnect to the internet.

When troubleshooting, using offline mode can help resolve certain issues. You can try toggling it on and off to reset the connection to the server, or use it instead of restarting the app when you need to record diagnostic logs like IMAP or EWS logs.

How to enable Offline mode

Offline mode can be switched on at any time via Menu > File (Windows) or File (macOS) and selecting Work Offline.

This will immediately disconnect the app from the internet.

On top of that, the app can be launched in offline mode, so the synchronization process doesn’t even start.

To do so, press and hold the “Ctrl” key when clicking on the eM Client launch icon.

A pop-up window will appear, asking whether you wish to start the app in Offline mode – click “Yes”:

eM Client: Start in offline mode

This can be especially useful if you want to restore data from a backup file without re-syncing or overwriting it, particularly when the data has already been deleted from the server.

With the introduction of the Profiles feature, any of your specific profiles can be launched offline as well, via the Profiles manager.

The manager will be shown automatically at the app startup if you enable the “Show profile manager on startup” option in Settings > General > Profiles.

Or you can launch it manually by pressing and holding the “Alt” key while clicking on the eM Client icon.

You’ll see the “Work Offline” option at the bottom of the pop-up window:

eM Client: Start in offline mode

Just select the profile you wish to launch in offline mode and click “Start”.

While staying constantly online might feel inevitable these days, there are times when disconnecting is the preferred – or even necessary – option. eM Client lets you stay in charge of that with a dedicated offline mode feature, so you can keep working without distractions, protect your data on unsecured networks, or safely restore data from a backup. That way, eM Client gives you the freedom to work your way, wherever you are.
